Get Ready for British Science Week

Did you know that Thomas Crapper mass produced the flushing toilet in the 1880s (and conveniently provided us with a slang term for the toilet)? Or that Pokémon was created in 199 6 by Japanese game designer Satoshi Tajiri?

It's British Science Week from 8-17 March, and all 'game changers and change makers' in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths are being celebrated for their contribution to society.

Remarkable advances in science and medicine are sure to fascinate your pupils, and engage them in a science or STEM lesson  while reinforcing the importance of this innovative subject area for real-life purposes and the power to change lives for the better.

One of your pupils could be the next big game changer or change maker!

There is also the opportunity to incorporate literacy and/or history through researching and writing biographies about significant game changers and change makers throughout time.

Have fun with it and provide your students with authentic learning opportunities to inspire them while exposing them to innovative thinking and influential thinkers.

We have selected a free unit from our popular Primary Science eBook for you to download. Primary Science  is a curriculum- linked resource that provides pupils with the opportunity to explore, investigate and develop knowledge and understanding of the four stands:

  • living things;
  • energy and forces;
  • materials;
  • environmental awareness and care.

The British Science Week website (www.britishscienceweek.org) is also a great place to start planning your activities. This year they have a fantastic free activity pack to download. The theme for the 2019 activity packs is ‘journeys’. From creating tunnels, time capsules and perfume,  to keeping a nature log and mummifying an orange, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to tag your science week activities on Twitter using #BSW19.
