Teaching Writing Strategies: Book 4

Teaching Writing Strategies is a series of six books with the explicit, overarching aim of teaching the skills and strategies required to improve the clarity, correctness and richness of children’s writing. Within the series, they are taught to recognise, choose and use specific strategies. The focus is on the process, rather than on practising, in this instance, specific text types. To this end, priority is given to improving writing at the sentence level. There is a strong hands-on emphasis; that is, there is an expectation that the children will write to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

Unlike many other writing workbooks, the desired outcome is to have the learners structuring correct, enriched sentences to more clearly convey ideas and information. The ultimate goal is for them to produce clear, precise writing for a specific purpose and to understand that proofreading and editing is an integral part of the writing process.

The books are divided into four sections:
  1. Word choices
  2. Sentence structure
  3. Punctuation
  4. Editing/proofreading

Writing – Transcription
  • Use further prefixes and suffixes and understand how to add them.
  • Spell further homophones.
  • Spell words that are often misspelt.
  • Place the possessive apostrophe accurately in words with regular and irregular plurals.
Writing – Composition
  • Evaluate and edit by: – assessing the effectiveness of others’ writing and suggesting improvements. – proposing changes to grammar and vocabulary to improve consistency, including the accurate use of pronouns in sentences.
  • Proofread for spelling and punctuation errors.
Writing – Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation
  • Develop their understanding of the concepts set out in English Appendix 2, by extending the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions; choosing nouns or pronouns appropriately for clarity and cohesion and to avoid repetition; and using conjunctions and adverbs.
  • Indicate grammatical and other features by indicating possession by using the possessive apostrophe with plural nouns and using and punctuating direct speech.

    Great book for teaching writing. My students are able to write their own stories using these books. Good for comprehension skills too.
