The Teacher's Moderation Toolkit Book 1 has been created for use with KS1 (Years 1 and 2). Ensuring accurate teacher assessment of writing and consistency across school is high on the agenda for many primary school teachers.

The Teacher's Moderation Toolkit provides everything that is needed to equip staff with a wide range of resources to:
  • Support their own judgements, by providing high-quality, standardised, termly examples of real children's writing;
  • Provide staff with examples of writing that they can annotate in phases or clusters, using non-negotiable writing sheets referenced to the national curriculum, which can be checked against annoted examples in the resource book; and
  • Share exemplar’s with pupils, to raise expectations, to peer assess a neutral piece of writing and to up-level writing.

    Teaching is hard enough without feeling unprepared and unsupported. We believe that the toolkit both prepares our staff with the ability to talk with confidence about progression in writing and supports their judgements. In essence, we don’t know how schools manage without it.

    As a school improvement consultant and a local authority writing moderation manager, I can strongly recommend the Teacher’s Moderation Toolkit, which I think is an invaluable resource for primary school teachers. The three books in the series provide real, practical, moderated examples of pupils’ writing across each year group. The samples are very useful in informing individual teacher’s judgements but are also highly effective in guiding moderation and informing standardisation exercises within and across schools. I have recommended these books on numerous occasions and the feedback which I subsequently receive has been overwhelmingly positive. The books are excellent value for money and I would urge all schools to buy copies.
